With Sunday's victory over struggling Middlesbrough, Manchester United moved to within 4 points of the top 4 and have two games in hand over fourth placed Liverpool.
After the 3-1 defeat Arsenal suffered at West Brom in the early kickoff on Saturday, Manchester United knew a win against relegation-threatened Middlesbrough would see them move from sixth position for the first time since October.
The game at the Riverside Stadium began with the hosts in the ascendancy but it was United who took the lead, thanks to Marouane Fellaini's first league goal of the season. From then on the Red Devils controlled the match.
A thunderous Jesse Lingard's strike put United 2 goals up and so a defeat for the Boro seemed inevitable. Substitute, Rudy Gestede did put one past De Gea to half the deficit - but it proved to only be a consolation.
A goalkeeping error from Victor Valdez was capitalised on by Antonio Valencia
to put the tie to bed.
Victory - the Red Devils' 600th in Premier League- means United have their destiny in their own hands as if they are able to win the two games in hand they would break into the top four. And perhaps be closer to securing automatic promotion to the Champions League group stages.
