The Portuguese striker has been charged by UEFA over his celebration against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday (12/3/19). After Ronaldo made his hat-trick against Atletico, he made a gesture towards his groin mimicking Atletico's head coach, Diego Simeone, in his first leg win over Juventus. However, Simeone was not banned but fined €20,000 (£17k/$23k) by UEFA for his improper conduct.
The 34-year-old forward has now become the subject of the UEFA disciplinary board. A statement released by UEFA confirming the charge of improper conduct against Ronaldo read:
“Following a disciplinary investigation conducted by a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector, in accordance with the Article 55 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR), disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the UEFA Champions League round of 16 match between Juventus Football Club and Club Atlético de Madrid, played on 12 March in Italy. The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will deal with this case at its next meeting on 21 March 2019.”
Will Ronaldo be banned?
UEFA confirmed today (March 17) that a disciplinary investigation has been opened against the Juventus forward with the hearing date set on March 21. It is unclear whether or not Ronaldo will receive a ban but he will probably be fined just like the case of Atletico's head coach- Simeone. However, a suspension could be given to the Portuguese striker if it was discovered that his celebration was towards Atletico's fans otherwise a warning or fine would suffice.
