But they would need to perform well this month if they are to qualify for Europe's elite competition.
When Jose Mourinho took over the reigns at Manchester United in the summer, there was a sense amongst the supporters that their club could win the Premier League for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure.
The Old Trafford outfit had suffered greatly at the hands of both David Moyes and Louis van Gaal. With the Theater of Dreams hosting some of the most boring football football in recent history. Mourinho was - and still is - seen as a man to correct the wrong and restore the Manchester giants to where it rightfully belongs.
Fast forward nine months into his reign and things aren't so rosy anymore. United lie in sixth place, four points behind fourth place Manchester City - albeit with a game in hand over their crosstown rivals. The failure of Mourinho's men to put away teams at Old Trafford is probably the reason why they have not broken into the top four since October.
Mourinho will know his side have to deliver this month |
Luckily for United, winning the Europa League is another way to qualify. The Red Devils are the favourites to win Europa League, with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur already dumped out.
The Red Devils have made the quarter finals, where they will face Belgian outfit Anderlecht. The first leg is going to be played in Belgium next week.
April hasn't started brightly for United though as they have picked up only two points from the two games they have played this month. What makes it even more frustrating is the fact that those games were played at the Theatre of Dreams. So, it's two games down seven more to go for United in a hectic run of fixtures that includes the Manchester derby and the game at home to log leaders, Chelsea.
The Red Devils will need to up their game if they are to come away with anything from those fixtures. This month truly is season defining one for the Manchester giants and they can't afford to falter.
